Union minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that India was planning a major thrust in sphere of renewable energy sourcese, especially solar and wind energy.

On November 14, Centre would be launching a solar mission on the birth anniversary former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Abdullah said, while addressing a gathering at the Aligarh Muslim University.
Calling upon the centres of higher education to intensify their efforts in renewable energy, which is a "science of the future", Abdullah said that the Centre was ready "to help AMU in establishing a new department of Renewable Energy Resources."
Earlier the chancellor of AMU, former Chief Justice of India Justice A M Ahmadi presented this year"s Sir Syed Ahmad Khan International Award in the field of life sciences jointly to Professor Syed Zahoor Qasim, noted Marine biologist and Prof Obaid Siddiqui for his work in the field of genetic Molecular Biology and Neuroscience.
AMU Vice Chancellor Prof PK Abdul Azis said that the university would shortly be becoming a part of "National Knowledge Network" under which it will have super fast computer link up with about one thousand institutions of higher learning and research in the country.
Apart from this, two special centres of the university would be launched in West Bengal and Kerala from the next academic year.
The state government"s in these two places have donated 300 acres of land, free of cost for the establishment of campuses in these places, Azis added.
